im a horrible cook so when i say somewhat easy, i mean REALLY easy. :P

Japanese food is considered one of the healthiest types of food in the world. It is generally light and fish based, though with foreign influences, dietary habits have changed over the years. Try some of these recipes for your next meal!

Grilled Salmon Teriyaki

For this recipe, you’ll need 4 salmon fillets and the following for the sauce:

1/2 cup mirin (sweetened rice cooking wine)

1/4 cup sake (rice wine)

1/4 cup soy sauce

1 tbsp sugar.

Simply heat all in a saucepan and stir the sugar until dissolved.

Continue stirring for 25 minutes over a low flame to let the flavours come together.

If you like, thicken with a bit of cornstarch and water.

Grill the fish on both sides for about 2 minutes, then begin basting each side with the sauce.

Continue basting and flipping over the fish until it is done.

Serve the fish and pour a bit more of the sauce over it, sprinkling with some toasted sesame seeds.

To complete the meal, add a side of rice and miso soup!

Miso Soup

Miso shiru, or miso soup, is a fermented soy bean soup made from dissolving miso paste in a bonito fish flake and seaweed stock.

Simply simmer bonito fish flakes and a piece of kombu seaweed in water for a few minutes. Do not boil.

Strain the stock and using 2 1/2 cups of this broth, add 4 tbsp of miso and dissolve.

Add small cubes of firm tofu and finely sliced green onions right before serving.

Tamagoyaki (Japanese Omelette) without a square pan?

I bought ‘The Manga Cookbook’ recently, and one of the recipes was for tamagoyaki, but instead of preparing the shape in a pan, it said to wrap the egg in a sheet of tin foil and let its shape mold from that?

I can’t find any other places with that recipe, let alone a video showing how to do it.

Any suggestions? There aren’t any places that sell that type of pan near here :

I found a recipe on Youtube… Will it be helpful?… Maybe. Here it is if you wanna give it a look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ja8fCHS4aRI

Can I make a bento box… like the box itself?

I love the idea of Japanese bento boxes. I would like one for my lunch, but my family just doesn’t have an extra $15 or so dollars to buy one off eBay. Is there anyway I can make one (like out of a different container) or would this be unacceptable in Japan?

Not sure what you mean. I love bento boxes as well. What type are you hoping to make? The less-useful wooden laquer ones that are beautiful, the cute plastic design ones, or functional ones?

You can buy these tupperware called Lock & Lock which are PERFECT for a functional bento. They seal 100% airtight and watertight so nothing will ever leak. They have four locks, one on each side of the lid, so it will never pop open in your bag. And they sell them with inserts, so you can section your food appropriately. They come in all different sizes. They’re really awesome. I have two, a small one and a larger one, I use the larger one for loose food that I want to section off and the small one for one-piece items like some fried rice that I’d like to bring to work, or some pasta, or etc.

I got some bento boxes the last time I was in Japan (the cute plastic ones) but they are not as functional as my lock&locks, so I don’t use them so often. They don’t seal as tightly. Though, that’s fine if I wrap them tightly in a furoshiki.
